Le lac Nasser, l'eau au coeur du désert
Lake Nasser is a very young lake. It was created in the 1960s following the construction of a large hydroelectric dam in Aswan. At that time, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser wanted to modernize his country by providing it with access to electricity. To achieve this, he did not hesitate to divert the course of the Nile, the second largest river in the world. At the end of this monumental project, the Aswan Dam created a huge lake. In Egypt, it is called Lake Nasser, in honor of the president who conceived it. Since the dam was built, humans and nature have benefited greatly from the incredible transformation of part of ancient Nubia into a freshwater reservoir. Today, the tamed Nile no longer produces destructive floods, and a new ecosystem has emerged in the middle of the desert.
